Zakat al-Fitr, known in the UK as Fitrana, is a small obligatory charity every Muslim pays at the end of Ramadan so that families in need can celebrate Eid too. For Ramadan 2027, most UK charities expect Fitrana to be around £5 to £7 per person, the cash value of one meal’s worth of staple food. You pay it for yourself and every member of your household, and it must reach the poor before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, expected on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027.
This guide explains how much Fitrana is in the UK, how the amount is worked out, who has to pay, and when the deadline falls. It also shows how Human Concern UK delivers your Fitrana as food to families in time for Eid.
Zakat al-Fitr is the charity of breaking the fast. It is due once a year, at the end of Ramadan, from every Muslim who can afford it. In the UK, many families call it Fitrana or Fitra, and you may also see it written as Zakat ul Fitr or Sadaqat al-Fitr.
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory: one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley, upon the slave and the free, the male and the female, the young and the old of the Muslims. And he commanded that it be paid before the people go out to the prayer.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503, Sahih Muslim 984)
This hadith answers three questions at once. Fitrana is obligatory. It is paid for every Muslim, including children. And it has a clear deadline: the Eid prayer.
Fitrana has two purposes: it purifies your fast and it feeds the poor on Eid. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscene speech, and as food for the poor.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1609, graded hasan)
No one fasts perfectly. A careless word or a moment of anger can slip into any day. Fitrana mends those gaps, and at the same time it makes sure no family wakes up on Eid morning without food.
Fitrana in the UK is expected to be around £5 to £7 per person for 2027. Most UK charities set Fitrana at £5 per person for Ramadan 2026, and the 2027 figure will be confirmed shortly before Ramadan, once current food prices are known.
The amount is not a random number. It is the cash value of one sa’, a measure used in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. One sa’ of staple food such as rice, flour, dates or barley weighs roughly 2.5 to 3 kg. UK charities price that amount of food and turn it into a simple figure per person.
The UK amount is set by pricing one sa’ of a common staple food. Scholars from different schools use slightly different bases:
| Basis | Measure | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Wheat or flour (Hanafi school) | Half a sa’ | The minimum amount most UK charities quote |
| Barley, dates or raisins (Hanafi school) | One full sa’ | A higher amount for those who wish to give more |
| Local staple such as rice (Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) | One full sa’ | Priced from common staple foods |
If you follow the Hanafi school, as many British Muslims of South Asian heritage do, you may choose to pay the value of dates or raisins rather than wheat. This gives the family who receives it more, and it is a beautiful way to go beyond the minimum.
Yes. Paying Fitrana in cash through a trusted charity is the common practice in the UK. Scholars differ on this point. The Hanafi school allows giving the value in money. Other schools prefer food. A charity such as Human Concern UK resolves this by using your cash to buy staple food and distributing it as food to families overseas. This meets both views.
Multiply the amount per person by everyone in your household. The head of the household pays for themselves and for everyone they support, including a spouse, children and any elderly parents who depend on them. A baby born before dawn on Eid day is included.
At £5 per person, a family of five pays £25. At £7 per person, the same family pays £35. If you are unsure of your total, our team can help you work it out.
Fitrana is due from every Muslim who has more than their basic needs for the day and night of Eid. You do not need to reach the Zakat nisab for most scholars. The Hanafi school links Fitrana to owning the nisab amount beyond basic needs. If you have any doubt, it is safer to pay, since the amount is small and the reward is great.
People who receive Fitrana are the poor and needy, as the hadith of Ibn Abbas makes clear. Fitrana is separate from your annual Zakat. Paying one does not replace the other.
The final deadline for Fitrana is before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. In the UK, that is expected on the morning of Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027, depending on the moon sighting your masjid follows.
The Prophet ﷺ was clear about what happens after that point. In the same hadith, Ibn Abbas reported: “Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is an accepted Zakat. Whoever pays it after the prayer, it is simply a charity among charities.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1609, graded hasan)
When you give through a charity that delivers food overseas, you should pay earlier. Food has to be bought, packed and handed to families before Eid morning. For this reason, we encourage UK donors to give their Fitrana early in Ramadan, and no later than the start of the last ten nights, expected from the evening of Saturday 27 February 2027. Our full guide to the Zakat al-Fitr deadline in 2027 explains every date in detail.

Yes. Many scholars, including the Hanafi and Shafi’i schools, allow paying Fitrana from the start of Ramadan. Paying early gives the charity time to deliver food before Eid.
You must still pay it as soon as you remember. It will count as a late payment and as general charity, so seek Allah’s forgiveness and make sure it is paid.
