Help Families Survive Winter and Rebuild After the Ceasefire

The ceasefire has brought temporary relief, but families in Gaza are now facing a deadly combination of winter storms, flooding, collapsing sanitation, severe shortages, and widespread displacement.

Recent assessments show:

As winter settles over Gaza, thousands of families are struggling to survive in torn, flooded tents that offer almost no protection from the cold. Heavy rainfall has already washed through large sections of displacement camps, and with more than 1.9 million people uprooted from their homes, the need for safe shelter is dire. Today, an estimated 93% of tents, approximately 125,000, are considered uninhabitable.

More than 18,600 households have been hit by recent flooding, leaving thousands of families displaced and facing increasingly harsh conditions. Since the ceasefire, about 48,000 winter clothing kits have reached communities, but needs continue to exceed available support. At the same time, malnutrition is worsening rapidly, shelter conditions remain critical. Many families are living in old, damaged tents that offer little protection from freezing temperatures, wind, and rain. With winter worsening, children, newborns, the elderly and people with disabilities are at extreme risk.

Stories of Hope From Gaza

A Mother of Three, Deir El Balah (IDP Camp)

“The tent was unbearably cold. When my children received warm coats and gloves, they finally slept through the night. My youngest smiled when he tried on his new shoes. Thank you for bringing warmth to us.”

A Father of Four, Deir al Balah

“We had only thin blankets. The insulated tarps and bedding kept my children and elderly mother safe from the cold. It felt like a miracle.”

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The ceasefire provides a brief respite, making it slightly easier to deliver aid like food, water, and medical care. However, access remains limited in many areas. HCI UK and our local partners are maximizing efforts to reach those in need while advocating for full, safe access for all humanitarian workers.

HCI UK has delivered emergency food, clean water, hygiene kits, medical supplies, winter relief, education support, and psychosocial care, reaching over 500,000 individuals (about 100,000 families). Our health clinics provide maternal care, chronic disease management, and mental health support.

Short-term (0–6 months): Focus on emergency relief, including food, water, hygiene, shelter, and psychosocial support.

Medium- to long-term (6 months–5 years): Expand shelter and nutrition programs, rebuild infrastructure, support livelihoods, and enhance education and health services for sustainable recovery.

The ceasefire halts violence but not the suffering. Rebuilding homes, schools, and lives requires ongoing support. Donations ensure families recover, children return to school, and communities regain stability and hope.
